How to get the SUM of averages rather than total?

Answered
Brendan Fry asked on April 15, 2020

Hi,
Please see the attached image and report.
We need to get the SUM (as in the hover over) shown in Total row rather than the AVG.
Is this possible? If so how?
Thanks
Brendan

Are there any updates on this?

Hello, Brendan,

Thank you for contacting us.

Our team would like to kindly explain that the total is calculated in the same way other values do.

Therefore, the total of the measure "#2" is calculated as total of "ZoneArea" / total of "#1", not the average of previously calculated values.

That behavior can not be changed in the current version of Flexmonster.

Please contact us in case other questions occur.

Best regards,
Illia

This is like a sum distinct, is that possible?
Thanks
Brendan

Hello, Brendan,

Thank you for your feedback.

The described aggregation is not available for CSV/JSON data sources. Even so, it is possible to implement your own realization of the custom data source API, where the needed aggregation can be calculated using your custom logic, including the different calculation of totals.

The custom data source API itself is a communication protocol that allows exchanging aggregated data between your data layer and Flexmonster. Detailed information about the protocol can be found in our documentation and in the following blog post.

Our team would like to kindly notice that such a way may be quite difficult; however, in perspective, its implementation gives the possibility to work with larger data sets and dynamically operate with the way aggregations work.

We hope it helps.
You are welcome to contact us in case additional questions arise.

Best regards,
Illia

Hi there,
This is not really a sufficient answer and would require a massive amount of work.
We really need the sum distinct aggregation.
Please put it on the roadmap.
Thanks
Brendan

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to us.

Our team would like to kindly explain that we need more information about the required aggregation in order to place an appropriate task on our road map.

As for now, we have faced difficulties in understanding the exact behavior of the described aggregation. Basically, we understand your requirement as the possibility to calculate the total of the calculated measure aggregating values from the measure itself instead of using the formula.
However, the behavior of such aggregation may be unexpected in case several levels are expanded on the pivot. Only the lowest level will use an actual formula. Higher ones are going to operate with previously calculated subtotals.

It would be useful for us if you could point to an analogical aggregation from another solution (for example, Excel), or provide a detailed explanation of the required functionality.

We are looking forward to hearing from you.

Regards,
Illia
